Faculty Positions in Dielectric and Piezoelectric Materials Department of Materials Science and Engineering North Carolina State University

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University is seeking to hire multiple
outstanding individuals in open rank tenured/tenure-track faculty positions in the general area of dielectric and
piezoelectric materials. Successful candidates will have achieved or be on a trajectory for international
prominence, and senior candidates will have demonstrated vision and skills to lead collaborative, multidisciplinary
research efforts. We also value individuals who demonstrate a commitment to fostering creative teaching and
instructional methods to enhance our undergraduate and graduate curricula. In–depth knowledge of the
processing-structure-property relationships, fundamental physics, and applied physics of dielectric and
piezoelectric materials is desired with an emphasis on experimentation. Examples of possible research interests
include the following:

  • Processing of dielectric and piezoelectric materials, including methods spanning classical processing
bulk methods to advanced thin film deposition techniques and additive manufacturing
  • Phase equilibria and phase boundary studies and their relation to properties
  • Reliability of materials and resistance to creep, fatigue, depolarization, and time-dependent dielectric
    degradation and breakdown
  • Capacitors
  • Integration science, including processing and fundamental studies of interfaces of dissimilar materials
  • The influence of composition and doping on dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric properties
  • Multiscale modelling and characterization of multiferroics
  • Materials informatics approaches that complement and guide experimentation

A Ph.D degree in Materials Science and Engineering or a related field is required, as well as demonstrated ability in
teaching and research. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a funded, independent research
program as well as to collaborate with other researchers at NC State. The candidate will be expected to teach at
both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the research

activities of the Center for Dielectrics and Piezoelectrics (CDP) at NC State. The CDP is a multi-institutional, NSF-
funded Industry/University Cooperative Research Center with industrial members from around the world. Faculty

will have numerous opportunities to leverage nationally recognized experimental facilities including the NC State
Analytical Instrumentation Facility and Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network. Faculty can also participate in
several other research centers and initiatives, including the DOE PowerAmerica Institute, the ASSIST NSF
Engineering Research Center, and the Center for Additive Manufacturing and Logistics.
The Materials Science and Engineering Department at NC State is a top 20 department with 24 faculty, and about
150 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. The department is located on the NC State Centennial Campus,
which is a nationally-leading university research park located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Raleigh is typically listed as
one of the best cities in which to live, and is known for its mild climate, vibrant cultural community, affordable
housing, and excellent business climate. It is part of the thriving Research Triangle region of North Carolina.
The Department is wholly committed to inclusivity and the promotion of diversity of all kinds in the discipline,
throughout the departmental culture, and in our professoriate. Successful candidates will have an equal level of

commitment and appreciation for how diversity fosters innovation. Candidates from backgrounds that are
underrepresented in science and engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.

Inquiries regarding this position may be directed to the Department Head, Prof. Don Brenner, at mse-dept-
