Another Successful Summer MAT-DAT REU

This essay was shared by Professor Yingling after the MAT-DAT REU wrapped up on August 2, 2023. It has been edited to fit.

We wrapped up the 2023 NSF REU summer program in Materials Research and Data Science at NC State Materials Science and Engineering! Our goal was to provide young materials scientists and engineers with training and hands-on experience in data science through their involvement in cutting-edge materials engineering projects, and together with this talented group of students, we have made significant strides in this exciting intersection. The research projects undertaken by the students showcased the immense potential of data-driven approaches in the realm of Materials Science. Moreover, witnessing their enthusiasm as they harnessed machine learning algorithms to predict material properties was truly inspiring.

The final poster competition showcased a remarkable level of progress achieved by students in short 10 weeks.

Winners

  • Emma Schatz (1st place, mentors: Vincenzo Musico, Noah Holzapfel and Prof. Veronica Augustyn)
  • Siri Mudunuri (2nd place, mentors: Alexey Gulyuk and Prof. Yaroslava Yingling)
  • Caroline Cunningham (3rd place, mentors: Alexey Gulyuk and Prof. Yaroslava Yingling)
  • Jack Austin (Faculty Choice; mentor: Zizhi Zhuang and Prof. Martin Thuo)

The success of our program would not have been possible without the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the commitment of our faculty, mentors, and support staff to nurturing the next generation of materials informatics enthusiasts. Special thanks to Hillary Stone for managing the logistics of the program and Alexey Gulyuk for teaching the hands-on materials informatics boot camp.
