Former MSE department head, Justin Schwartz, has been named the chancellor of the University of Colorado at Boulder (@cuboulder). Justin will assume his new role on July 1, leaving his current position as executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University (@pennstate).

“I received overwhelmingly positive feedback about Justin following his campus visit and open forums with CU Boulder faculty, staff and students,” said Todd Saliman, president of the University of Colorado system, in a statement. “He was equally well-received by community members who are critical partners of CU Boulder. After reflecting on this input and considering the exceptional attributes Justin brings, I am even more convinced he is the right person for the job.”

Schwartz served at NC State as Kobe Steel Professor and head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering from 2009 to 2017. He left NC State to become the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Engineering at Penn State.

A paper in Advanced Materials Technologies shows work done by Matt Clary, the first author and MSE Ph.D. student, and MSE Professor Joe Tracy as the corresponding author, use NdFeB microparticles in a thermoplastic elastomer to create these hard-magnetic cilia.

The Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network (RTNN) has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Opal Mann Green Engagement and Scholarship Award!

Presented annually since 2010 by the NC State Office of Outreach and Engagement, RTNN will be recognized for its outstanding contributions to nanotechnology research, education, and community engagement at an awards ceremony on April 29. NC State MSE is well represented with RTNN directed by MSE faculty members Profs Jacob Jones, and Nina Balke, and MSE staff member Program Manager Phillip Strader.
