Better Together: NRT Annual Meeting

Trainees Nina and Kelsey engaging with Dr. Kevin Leonard from the University of Kansas, a new PI of a Data-Enabled NRT focusing on data mining and machine learning for rational catalyst design.

The SEAS NRT was among the 85 National Science Foundation Research Traineeships (NRTs) represented at the 2019 Annual Meeting at Northwestern University on September 25 – 27, 2019. The meeting featured panel discussions, lightning talks, and poster sessions, in which SEAS was well represented in each platform. Dr. Caesar Jackson presented a lightning talk, Impact of an MS Bridge-to-PhD Traineeship Structure, and Dr. Kimberly Weems contributed to the Recruiting and Retaining Diverse Trainee Cohorts panel. Trainees, Kelsey Mirrielees and Nina Milliken, co-presented a poster on our SEAS collaborative project entitled, Engineering Engineers: Equipping the next generation of materials scientists and engineers with intelligent mathematical and statistical tools. Over 300 faculty, coordinators, evaluators, and graduate students had the opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices of their programs during dedicated discussion and workshop times. A highlight of the meeting was a plenary session, Science in Pop Culture: A Conversation with Eli Attie who is an Emmy-winning television writer, producer, and former political writer.

A special thank you to the Integrated Data-Driven Discovery in Earth & Astrophysical Sciences (IDEAS) NRT program and the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA) at Northwestern University for organizing a great meeting and being hospitable hosts.
