Cass's interests include engineering and science education, STEM identity development, engineering doctoral student experiences, and industry relevance in capstone courses.
Professor Cheryl Cass joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2011. She earned dual BS degrees in biological and agricultural engineering and biomedical engineering from NCSU and MS and PhD degrees from the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University, while also earning a graduate Certificate in Engineering and Science Education. She went on to serve as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University where her worked involved (1) qualitative evaluation of pedagogies that positively influence physics identity development (NSF # 0952460), (2) quantitative analysis of a nationally-representative dataset examining fluctuations in engineering career trajectories (NSF # 0624444), (3) investigation of the use of sustainability topics to recruit females into engineering disciplines (NSF 1036617), and (4) examination of the impact of mathematics identity on engineering career choice (NSF 0813702). In 2011, Dr. Cass was awarded an Apprentice Faculty Grant by the Educational Research and Methods Division of the American Society for Engineering Education. Cass' current duties as undergraduate program director include: advising MSE undergraduate students; directing the MSE ABET and MSE curriculum committees; serving on the College of Engineering curriculum committee; and driving MSE undergraduate recruitment. Her research focuses on the intersection of science and engineering identity and engineering career choice in post-secondary and graduate level programs, and her work is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF # 1259630; NSF # 1535254). Prof. Cass teaches MSE 201 (Structure and Properties of Engineering Materials), MSE 423/470 (Senior Design), MSE 485 (Biomaterials).
