Title “Data-Informed Decision Support: Point of Need Sensors for Testing Water”

Abstract

In this talk, I will summarize our work in rapid decision support informed by sensor data. With the ubiquity of smartphones, there is an opportunity to bring rapid diagnostics to the point of need. Our core expertise is in sensor hardware development, which bridges pillars of material science and electrical/chemical engineering. To develop point-of-need (decentralized) tools, we augment this hardware development effort with a focus on data science and decision science. In this talk I will summarize two case studies of electrochemical sensors from our work in the area of Planetary Health: i) pathogen detection in food and water, and ii) nutrient sensing in agricultural waters. Our aim in each of these projects is to break barriers for stakeholders by developing sensor-analytic solutions at the point of need. These tools connect data science, decision science, and analytical electrochemistry, creating a platform for rapid diagnostics. Key references on the development of this framework include:

Biography

Dr. Eric McLamore is an Associate Professor in Agricultural Sciences and Biosystems Engineering at Clemson University, and also holds an Adjunct Associate Professor position in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at NC State. Before joining Clemson, he was an Assistant, then Associate Professor at the University of Florida in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering from 2010-to 2020. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. His research focuses on the development of nano-biosensors that couple biological molecules with nanomaterials for selective capture of the target(s). The interdisciplinary group studies the behavior of electrochemical and photonic sensors in complex media (primarily in surface water, wastewater, and plant tissues). In the past 5 years, research on sensor hardware has expanded to include non-linear modeling, data analytics, and decision support. These two pillars (hardware development and in silico modeling/decision support) are the foundation of his current research. The impetus for his research is the idea of sensors as-a-service to society. Dr. McLamore has received numerous awards including multiple teaching awards (e.g., the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering National teacher of the Year award and the APLU/USDA National Teacher of the Year Award). His research program has produced 123 manuscripts (84 peer-reviewed manuscripts) and garnered $8,455,777 in funded grants, contracts, and contributions.
