Engineering A Better Summer Camp

By Leah Bellcase, MSE Ambassador

The department recently hosted a weeklong summer camp for rising juniors and seniors attending high schools across the United States. This summer camp, Engineering Better Stuff With Materials Science, ran from June 27-July 1, 2022, and presented students with unique opportunities to learn material fundamentals commonly taught in classes such as:

  • Metals
  • Ceramics
  • Polymers
  • Composites

Other research topics explored by the students include:

  • Nanomaterials
  • Biomaterials
  • Microelectronics
Perovskite captured from the TEM

Students also tested mechanical properties, learned how to use powerful microscopes such as the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), grow bismuth crystals, and were treated to making liquid nitrogen ice cream. The students enjoyed touring the research labs on campus AIF, RTNN, and the ISE additive manufacturing lab. But we think our MSE camp counselors may have had more fun than the campers! We look forward to having the next cohort join us in 2023!
