As Sydney Cook prepares to bid adieu to her undergraduate years at NC State University, her journey through the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) stands as a testament to adaptability, exploration, and unwavering dedication.

As the curtains draw close on his undergraduate journey, Ian Mercer, a hometown hero hailing from Cary, North Carolina, is set to embark on a new chapter of his life. Graduating from NC State University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Ian reflects upon his path, accomplishments, and aspirations with a sense of pride and gratitude.

Day of Giving was a record success for NC State MSE, achieving a significant milestone in its fundraising efforts, thanks to the generous contributions of alumni and industry leaders. The department surpassed its fundraising goal of 65 gifts, which unlocked a contribution from MSE alums and co-founders of Wolfspeed (Cree), Calvin Carter and John Edmond.

Professor Richard Spontak, a distinguished NC State University professor with joint appointments in the departments of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) was awarded an honorary doctorate during the Doctoral Awards Ceremony on March 8, 2024, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The ceremony recognized Spontak’s exceptional contributions to chemical process engineering and polymer science.

NC State MSE Associate Department Head Professor Franky So has made many significant contributions to the research, development, and commercialization of OLED devices and displays. During his tenure at Motorola from 1993 to 2001, he led a research team to demonstrate the first full video OLED display in the United States in 1997 and subsequently introduced the first OLED display for phones (Motorola Timeport P8767) in 1999. 

Donald Brenner, Kobe Steel Distinguished Professor in the North Carolina State University Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), has been named a 2024 Materials Research Society (MRS) fellow. This prestigious honor recognizes Brenner for his pioneering contributions to materials modeling and his broader impact on the materials community, including studies that have helped shape major research directions in the United States.

The NC State MSE department recently hosted its second visual competition as a way to foster positive morale and encourage a supportive spirit for faculty, staff, and students.
