Research Interests

Mechanical metallurgy, failure analysis, corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, structure-property relations, embrittlement of nuclear pressure vessel steels, formability of metals, superplasticity, development of crystallographic texture and the resulting anisotrophic properties, mechanical integrity of electronic packaging materials, dynamical behavior of point and line defects in solids using nuclear magnetic resistance.

Background and Research

Dr. Murty joined the NCSU faculty in 1985 as a professor in materials science and nuclear engineering. He had several years of industrial experience as a senior research engineer at the Lynchburg Research Center of Babcock and Wilcox and as a senior engineer at the Westinghouse R&D Center.

Murty's research has focused on failure analysis, corrosion and SCC, structure-property relations; effects of aggressive environment and neutron exposure on the mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of metals; embrittlement of nuclear pressure vessel steels; formability of metals; superplasticity; development of crystallographic texture and the resulting anisotropy, etc. The materials studied include aluminum alloys (Al-Mg, Al-Zn), pressure vessel steels, zirconium alloys (Zircaloys), stainless steels, turbine materials (Ni base superalloys), lead alloys (Pb-Sn), copper-gold alloys, alkali halides, high purity iron and molybdenum, hcp metals (Zr, Ti, Mg, Zn and their alloys), ferritic steels, WC-Co tool materials and alkali halides. Recent emphasis has been on electronic packaging materials, dynamical behavior of point and line defects using NMR, and nondestructive evaluation of materials damage.
