- Tzy-Jiun Mark Luo: Synthesis of bio-inorganic hybrid materials and bio-inspired materials through self-assembled processes, cell growth, sol-gel processing, and soft-lithography. Exploration of new concept for bio-fuel/bio-solar cell applications based on electrical and optical properties of novel materials.

- Thomas A. Rawdanowicz: Synthesis and characterization of electronic and opto-electronic materials, thin film growth using highly non-equilibrium processes, and electron beam-based analytical instrumentation and techniques.
- J. Michael Rigsbee: Phase transformations, surface engineering, materials characterization, thin films. Atomic-level design of non-equilibrium alloys using physical vapor deposition techniques and the application of electron optics-based microstructural and microchemical characterization techniques.
- George Rozgonyi: Defect engineering of semiconductors, including radiation stimulated annealing and epitaxial growth of silicon, impurity control in silicon via intrinsic and extrinsic gettering processes, point defect/extended defect dynamics during ion implantation and silicidation, and nano-scale contacts and junctions for giga-scale integrated circuit technology.
- Phillip Russell: Utilization of ion and electron beam techniques for materials characterization and modification; semiconductor characterization; scanning tunneling, scanned probe, nanotechnology scanning electron and atomic force microscopy; microfabrication techniques using ion and electron beams, surface analysis.
- Ron O. Scattergood: Mechanics and physics of materials, with emphasis on mechanical properties and fracture mechanics. Areas of expertise include mechanical behavior, defect theory, tribology and precision engineering.
- Zlatko Sitar: Thin film and bulk crystal growth of wide bandgap III-nitride semiconductors; heteroepitaxial growth of diamond thin films; silicon on diamond technology; field emission from carbon materials.
- Richard Spontak: Effects of homo/copolymer blending, molecular architecture, monomer sequencing, and solvation on the phase behavior of microstructural polymer systems.
- Joe Tracy: Chemistry, physics, and toxicology of colloidal magnetic and metallic nanoparticles, and their applications in composite materials, devices, spintronics, biology and medicine.
- Yaroslava Yingling: Multiscale molecular modeling as applied to design, fabrication and properties of biological nanoparticles and nanomaterials; structure-function relationship and tertiary structure prediction of RNA; laser micromachining, degradation, and characterization of polymeric, composite and biological materials.

Advanced methods of heteroepitaxy, e.g., pulsed chemical beam epitaxy and rapid thermal organometallic chemical vapor deposition. Investigations of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics.
- Ray Benson: New concepts regarding microstructures and their relationships to phase transformations in surface modified materials, along with the improvements in selected materials properties these new microstructures can produce, are being investigated in both metals and semiconductors.
