Professional Experience

Raoul Schlesser joined the Wide Bandgaps team in 1996 as a Visiting Scientist. He currently is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He focuses on the study of field emitting materials, as well as hot electron transport phenomena in wide bandgap materials. He is also involved in the growth and characterization of diamond and nitride materials.

Prior to joining NCSU, Raoul Schlesser worked for five years at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, as a Research Assistant in the Nonlinear Optics Lab at the Institute for Quantum Electronics (IQE), where he characterized electro-optic properties of organic nonlinear optical materials. In his Ph.D. work he developed an organic molecular beam epitaxy (OMBE) deposition system and investigated growth properties of organic nonlinear optical materials in an effort to fabricate novel electro-optic thin films.

As a student at ETH, Raoul Schlesser worked on a research project in laser spectroscopy, and studied experimental physics with a focus on Quantum Electronics and Solid State Physics.
